WandaVision: Scarlet Witch's Pregnancy (& Young Avengers Setup) Explained - Screen Rant

Scarlet Witch revealed her pregnancy in WandaVision episode 2, and it could have major implications for the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe — specifically, the Young Avengers. The Disney+ series officially marked the launch of the much-anticipated Phase 4 with two debut episodes. Starring Elizabeth Olsen and Paul Bettany reprising their MCU roles as Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch and Vision, the series is set after the events of Avengers: Endgame. After a delayed release, WandaVision introduced a mysterious reality that presents Wanda and Vision as a married couple in the suburban town of Westview.

After a premiere episode that thrust Wanda and Vision into a dinner party fiasco, WandaVision episode 2 mirrored another classic black-and-white sitcom, but this time, it was set in the 1960s. After the pair practiced their magical act for the town's fundraising talent show, Vision attended a Neighborhood Watch meeting while Wanda spent time with Agnes (Kathyrn Hahn) and the women of the area. As time went on, Wanda started to realize that this ideal suburbia may not be what it seems. Despite the concern, Wanda and Vision followed through with their magical act. Wanda was forced to use her Scarlet Witch powers to cover up Vision's abilities since the android was malfunctioning from an internal issue.

Though the episode ended with the timeline shifting to color in the 1970s, WandaVision also jumpstarted Wanda's pregnancy subplot. The first two episodes greatly alluded to children through questioning from Mrs. Hart (Debra Jo Rupp), Agnes' mention of schools, and the fact that the talent show raised money "for the kids." The introduction of Wanda and Vision's kids wasn't a surprise based on pre-release reveals, but there's still a ton of mystery surrounding the pregnancy. The story direction will clearly affect Wanda and Vision, but the pregnancy could also be a big factor for the MCU's future.

Why Scarlet Witch Is Pregnant In WandaVision

Following Westview's talent show, Wanda and Vision returned home and finally had a chance to relax after the day's events. Upon remarking about fundraising "for the children," Wanda stood up to get some popcorn, realizing that she was pregnant. After her initial confusion, Vision reassured her that her pregnancy was real. While that may be in this warped reality, the questions remain regarding how Wanda could go from nothing to visibly pregnant in a matter of seconds. It was made clear that she doesn't become pregnant naturally, but her offspring will ultimately be a major focus of WandaVision.

Seeing as Vision is very much alive in this world, the pregnancy may be part of the grand illusion. It's unclear what this world truly is and who exactly is controlling the events. If Wanda herself is somehow altering this sitcom-esque world, her mind could still be grieving Vision. In doing so, she might be dismayed at the fact that the pair will never have the chance to settle down and start a family. By becoming pregnant in this world, Wanda is fulfilling a hope that she may never get the chance to encounter.

On the other hand, some instances within the first two episodes indicate that Wanda is trapped in this reality while someone else is pulling the strings. If that's the case, the person or people behind the ongoings clearly want Wanda and Vision to have children for a specific reason. With the Easter eggs connected to HYDRA, there's a possibility that remnants of the organization or another force don't want Scarlet Witch and Vision, but instead, their children. Footage has revealed that the pair have twins, which follows their comic book history while hinting at what's to come.

Wanda & Vision's Children In Marvel Comics Explained

In Marvel Comics, Wanda and Vision also had a romantic relationship before marrying and having twin sons, Thomas and William. Tommy and Billy as they were called, weren't conceived naturally considering Vision was an android. Instead, the twins were created through Scarlet Witch's magic with the help of the fragmented soul of a demon known as Mephisto. At one point, Wanda's memories of her sons are wiped. During the House of M storyline in the comics, Wanda was encouraged to create a reality-warping parallel universe after she was driven mad due to the loss of her sons.

Tommy and Billy reappeared in the form of reincarnations sometime later. By then, the pair were teenage superheroes with ties to the Avengers. Both boys were raised separately before realizing that they were indeed twin brothers. Whereas Tommy went by the name Speed with powers similar to Wanda's brother, Quicksilver, Billy used the moniker of Wiccan, and he possessed magical abilities like his mother. The pair eventually teamed up to locate Wanda before her full memory was restored.

Both Speed and Wiccan served as key members of the Young Avengers, a team of superheroes formed with the help of Vision in case the Avengers disbanded. Billy was originally recruited by Iron Lad, and he looked up to Scarlet Witch before knowing the two had a familial connection. With the help of Billy, Tommy was found and brought on a team member to fulfill Vision's plan of another group of crime-fighters. Other members of Young Avengers included Hawkeye, Hulkling, Kid Loki, Miss America, Stature, and Patriot.

WandaVision Is Setting Up MCU's Young Avengers

A Young Avengers team has yet to appear in the MCU, but that could change soon. Phase 4 projects are greatly setting up the possibility of the team's introduction to live-action. WandaVision including Tommy and Billy could be the first major step in building the foundation for the Young Avengers. It already seems likely that the debut of Wanda and Vision's son is more than just a clever Easter egg connecting the story to the comic books. Instead, WandaVision might be hinting that a formation of a new team of superheroes is on the horizon.

Aside from Tommy and Billy, the MCU already has a few other Young Avengers members established. The Hawkeye on the team isn't Clint Barton, but instead, his protege, Kate Bishop. The passing of the mantle will be the focus of another upcoming Disney+ series, Hawkeye. Hailee Steinfeld is set to portray the teenager as learns to take over the role from Clint, who serves as her mentor. Stature, of course, is the alias of Cassandra Lang, the daughter of Scott Lang, aka Ant-Man. Cassie has already appeared multiple times in the MCU, and the character has been recast with Kathryn Newton ahead of Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. With four Young Avengers being explored, WandaVision is likely just the start of something bigger to come.
