Meeting Tony Leung On Shang-Chi Set Left Kevin Feige Speechless - Screen Rant

Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige says meeting Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings’ Tony Leung left him speechless. The Marvel Cinematic Universe’s first Asian-led superhero movie, Destin Daniel Cretton’s Shang-Chi, has finally made its way to theaters. The film follows Simu Liu as Marvel’s eponymous Master of Kung Fu who is coerced into confronting his father, Wenwu, and the Ten Rings criminal organization. The film’s cast includes Liu, Awkwafina, Michelle Yeoh, Benedict Wong, Fala Chen, Meng'er Zhang, and Leung.

Now in its fourth phase, the MCU has a knack for drawing top-tier talent into its ranks. With Shang-Chi, the studio brought in one of the world’s most recognizable stars, Hong Kong legend Leung, to play Wenwu, an updated version of the real Mandarin. In the comics, both the Mandarin and Shang-Chi’s father, Fu Manchu, adhere to racist stereotypes. Therefore, Cretton and co-writer David Callaham created Wenwu, who not only rejects any notion of being a caricature but is already being praised as one of the MCU’s best villains.

In a recent interview with Film Companion, Feige talked about how lucky the MCU is that Leung chose to be a part of Shang-Chi. Feige also recalled being left “nearly speechless” upon meeting the actor. Read what he had to say below:

"Tony Leung does seem like a whole different layer of movie star," said Feige "He is a very, very talented man. I don't feel it was a masterstroke for us, I feel we were lucky that he chose us to make his first Hollywood film appearance in [Shang-Chi] and give all of himself and all of his talent to creating this amazing, amazing character of Wenwu. I've been around a lot of movie stars and a lot of living legends, but I was nearly speechless when I met him briefly on the set. Because he seems like such an otherworldly star directly from the sky [laughs].”

Despite playing the “villain” in Shang-Chi, Leung said he never thought of his character as a villain and instead focused on Wenwu’s backstory and motives. In the film, Wenwu is driven by a love for his family and legacy, even when it results in catastrophe. The actor has also opened about avoiding stories about failed fathers because of how they hit too close to home. That is until Shang-Chi came along. Although aspects of the character were established before Leung’s involvement, he worked with Marvel and Cretton to craft his character and make him as compelling as possible. And, it’s clear everyone involved with Shang-Chi more than enjoyed working with him.

During an “Ask Me Anything” session on r/MarvelStudios, Liu was asked what it was like working with Leung. Liu described the experience as “a master class in acting” and called Leung “every bit as legendary as the legends say.” In addition to performing his own stunts, Liu also turns out a committed performance in an admittedly very personal film. Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is currently receiving universal acclaim for its action sequences, heart, and, of course, Leung’s villain.
